My hometown rep Joe Barton (R-Arlington) has actually proposed
something I agree with! Down with the BCS! Barton’s bill will
prohibit the marketing, promotion, and advertising of a postseason game as a national championship’ football game, unless it is the result of a playoff system. Violations of the prohibition will be treated as violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act as an unfair or deceptive act or practice.
I’m not sure if the bill has a chance to go anywhere and it might have
some constitutional problems. Does the right of people to know the
true national champion outweigh the rights of businesses to advertise
and promote an event of their choice and for the NCAA to choose how it
organizes it’s competitions? Probably not, but here’s hoping!
