Thoughts on the second half:

6:18PM: Springsteen is good. But some of the football stage banter is odd…

6:21PM: Is Carlos Boozer the best overstock.com could do for it’s Super Bowl ad?

6:22PM: People literally laughing their asses off. LMAO! OK, not really. A painfully unfunny commercial is not the best strategy for advertising your comedy series, NBC.

6:25PM: Funny ID theft commercial by 1st Bank. Unfortunately, I’m more worried about my bank’s solvency than little programs they can overcharge me for. So it was a good ad at least for name recognition.

6:33PM: The Steelers hit a lot harder than the Cardinals. I guess that what happens when there is a baseball team in the Super Bowl.

6:37PM: Free Grand Slam at Denny’s this Tuesday! To everyone in America! Oh, sorry Sneaky and Ranma…

6:54PM: Roughing the placekick holder…The Cards are finding novel ways to throw the game away.

6:56PM: 20 – 7 Steelers with a couple minutes left in the third quarter. My prediction is looking good (31 – 14 Steelers).

6:59PM: Annoying CareerBuilder.com ad, but maybe it will be effective in making people ponder how much they hate their job and look on site, which is the goal.

7:05PM: Cheap Frontier airline tickets! That could be good for me here in Denver!

7:07PM: Time to go walk the dog. I hope I don’t miss a Kurt Warner sack…

7:20PM: Looks like Arizona has a good drive going…and Pittsburgh is helping them with defensive holding.

7:23PM: What a condescending Vizio commercial. And it seems like it is trying to communicate with people that have already bought a hi-def TV. My TV doesn’t say “Vizio”…but I don’t think I overpaid, since my TV is a $250 heavy, regular TV.

7:26PM: Nice grab by Fitzgerald. 20-14 Steelers….The Cardinals aren’t allowed to score again, or else it will ruin my prediction.

7:29PM: Strange Hulu.com commercial…Doesn’t talking about TV (and hulu) turning people’s brain to mush make most people less likely to watch?

7:35PM: Strange Pepsi McGuyver parody. Scrapping the bottom of the barrel of pop culture references?

7:42PM: Almost a safety for AZ…missed it by an inch.

7:45PM: OK, now a safety. Holding in the endzone. Another rule I didn’t know.

7:47PM: Nice hit on the kcikoff. Its now 20 – 16 Steelers; Arizona has the ball with 2:50 left in the game. If the Steelers D hold, the game is over. The Cards need a touchdown now. Either way, my prediction is fucked.

7:48PM: Wow. 65 yard touchdown my Larry Fitzgerald. 23 – 20 Cardinals. Shocking!

7:55PM: OK, now Go Daddy is getting a little bit closer to their sweet spot. But the performancing enhancing drug hearing was a little bit awkward, but a nice transition to enhancing your image via a website.

7:57PM: If the Steelers can tie it and force overtime, maybe this will give the NFL’s stupid overtime rule some much needed attention.

7:58PM: Santonio Holmes is taking over. MVP if Steelers pull it off, imo.

8:00PM: Touchdown!? Looks like the feet are in…but it’ll be close.

8:07PM: 15 seconds left. The Cards have no timeouts remaining. One or two more chances to go 40 yards.

8:08PM: Steelers win!

8:13PM: That was a lot more entertaining than I thought it would be. Very entertaining in fact. It was slow most of the game, with lots of penalties. But then the 4th quarter got cooking. The Cards came back from 13 down, and then the Steelers marched right down and scored the game winning touchdown. Overall, not a classic, but a classic ending.

4:47PM: The first commercial involving a man getting hit in crotch. Thanks Doritos. First of many?

4:49PM: Maybe Troy Palamolo needs to gets some Kareem Abdul Jabar googles, if his contacts are giving him problems.

4:51PM: Funny Conan O’Brien Bud Light commercial. Funnier after being in Japan and seeing what American actor shill for abroad.

4:53PM: The Cardinals’ defense is a joke. This game is going to be a blow-out. (Prediction for the final score: Steelers 31, Cards 14…see how it holds up).

4:57PM: Roethlesburger doesn’t seem nearly as nervous as his first Super Bowl…he’s already completed a pass this game!

5:01PM: End of first quarter. It looks like the Steelers wanted to do some trickeration, with faking a reverse, but faked each other out.

5:02PM: Anna Lucia (from LOST!) is in the new Fast and Furious movie! (Three Fast, Thrice Furious!)

5:07PM: Danica Patrick in a Go Daddy commercial….can’t they come up with something more risque? (yes, there’s implied lesbianism, but it was subtle, at least subtle by Go Daddy standards).

5:10PM: I’m sure all the VIPs at the Super Bowl are really enjoyingg their stay in Tampa lol.

5:13PM: Budweiser clydesdale horse drama! Something for the whole family.

5:14PM: New Star Trek movie…I’m not sure want to think. I’m a nerd, but not that big a nerd…

5:15PM: Yes! They just showed Matt Leinart holding a clipboard. I was waiting for it all game! Go Horns!!!

5:22PM: How exactly does Cars.com give you confidence in buying a car? Half the people posting are shady used car dealers and the other half are people (like me) trying to wrench every buck out of selling their car themselves rather than to a dealer for cheap.

5:33PM: This game is at a pretty slow pace…Lots of penalties…not too much to write about at the second. At least I just learned what the rule for chop blocks is…

5:35PM: Even with talking babies, I think E*Trade is going to have trouble convincing people to invest in the stock market.

5:37PM: What are they promoting the return of the Sobe Lizards? Is this something I should be aware of and/or even care about?

5:39PM: Ski injuries make me want to drink Bud Light! So drinkable!

5:44PM: Talking flowers insulting a perfectly normal looking woman as ugly and pathetic… Not sure if Teleflower’s Teleflora’s marketing people made a good call on that one.

5:50PM: Holy fuck. A 100 yard interception return for a touchdown. Go Steelers! I bet the city of Pittsburgh is freaking out right now.

5:54PM: The Cardinals’ offense needs to work on their tackling. Kurt Warner was right next to him and hardly made an effort.

5:57PM: Time to go make some dinner and watch Bruce Springsteen.

After 10 years, how many times has the BCS worked properly and matched the two clearly best teams in the country? maybe half the time? The system is a complete joke, and every year that goes by makes me all the more sick of it.

This year was probably one of the most unsatisfying of all, especially for us Texas fans. This year the BCS provided so little clarity to the national championship process, and even blurred it by messing with the tie breaker process for the Big 12 (not the BCS’s fault, but it exposed numerous flaws in the system). Sure Florida beat Oklahoma in the “national championship” game, but it is highly debatable if OU was even the best team in the Big 12 (45-35 anyone?). The BCS was a complete clusterfuck this year. Utah,Texas, and USC had just as much right, or more, to play in the national championship games as either Florida or OU.

I think the AP has a moral obligation this year to vote for a split national championship. And Utah, as the only undefeated team, deserves it.

What do you all think? Vote on the forumz!

Not that I care that much about the NFL (college football is much more entertaining in my opinion, even with the stupid BCS), but it would have been nice for at least one of the teams that I loosely follow to have shown up at all during win-and-you’re-in season finales. Instead, neither game was remotely close and there was no point watching beyond the second quarter.

I guess I’ll just have to wait for the Longhorns to play in the Fiesta Bowl. Hopefully that will be better, even if it is just a meaningless exhibition game since they were robbed of their chance to play for the national championship…

My hometown rep Joe Barton (R-Arlington) has actually proposed
something I agree with! Down with the BCS! Barton’s bill will

prohibit the marketing, promotion, and advertising of a postseason game as a national championship’ football game, unless it is the result of a playoff system. Violations of the prohibition will be treated as violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act as an unfair or deceptive act or practice.

I’m not sure if the bill has a chance to go anywhere and it might have
some constitutional problems. Does the right of people to know the
true national champion outweigh the rights of businesses to advertise
and promote an event of their choice and for the NCAA to choose how it
organizes it’s competitions? Probably not, but here’s hoping!

Oklahoma jumped Texas in the BCS standings, which breaks the three-way tie in the Big 12 South. Now Oklahoma will go on to the Big 12 Championship game versus Missouri next week. This is especially crappy since Texas beat Oklahoma earlier in the year. Of course, if Texas had finished off Texas Tech (rather than dropping a game-ending interception and then giving up a last second touchdown to lose the game), all the BCS crap wouldn’t have come into the equation and Texas would beat OU in a two-way tie breaker based on the head-to-head victory.

So now, Oklahoma has the inside track to the national championship game versus whoever wins the SEC championship (Alabama or Florida). If Oklahoma wins, they are a shoe-in. But if they somehow lose to Missouri, that could let Texas slip into the championship game…of course, the fact that they didn’t win their conference might get held against them and possibly either the SEC runner-up or USC could end up in the title game. Hopefully the lack of a conference championship won’t hurt Texas in the final BCS standings if Mizzou wins, considering that 1) they got screwed by the BCS in the first place, which is why they aren’t advancing to the conference champiionship, and 2) they beat Missouri in the regular season already. Of course, I find it highly unlikely that Mizzou will pull of the upset of Oklahoma…so it looks like the Sooners will be in the BCS national championship game.

But considering Oklahoma’s 4-game lossing streak in BCS games…maybe Texas would have been the better choice. And no matter what, at least we won’t have to watch an Ohio State blow-out loss in the title game this year.
